I can’t believe that my baby is half a year old. I know I’ve been watching him grow and change but it seems like I just had him yesterday… maybe that’s because I’m still trying to get the hang of being a mom. At any rate he is certainly making progress. And while he’s still too young for half a birthday cupcake he’s big enough to try banana’s for the first time. If he likes fruit this much I can’t wait to see what he’s going to think of cake. Happy birthday Baby Man!

Jooooooodaaaaaaaaaaaay

Yesterday Joel’s younger sister had her birthday. Jody turned a quarter of a century and what better way to celebrate 25 than working on another difficult cheesecake. She wanted a chocolate cheese cake with four different layers that mimicked one from the Cheesecake factory. The first layer was normal chocolate cake, without the flour. The second was chocolate cheesecake. The third was chocolate moose. And the top layer was a chocolate ganache. The recipe looked really intimidating and if I’d been making this on my own it would’ve been disastrous. But thankfully Jody was with me and she kept me from throwing the wrong measurements in the bowl and made it fun. And it turned out… pretty darn good.

The pictures really don’t do the quality of the cake justice. It was probably in the top 3 cakes I have ever eaten. Next time we just have to work on the presentation…

Oh! And I almost forgot- If you are reading this and think “I would love to have a cake like this that and I’d be willing to pay for it” then you should contact my mom (I know- you thought I was going to say Me =P ). My mom has been making and selling cakes for years and years. She stopped for a while but now she’s out of retirement and back in the kitchen and it’s all to raise money for a mission trip to Uganda. I’m so proud of her and my dad for stepping out and doing this. But they have a couple thousand dollars to raise. So if you’d like to help and you like cake you can ask me and I’ll send you her contact info.

Christmas in July

This past Sunday was Momma Smith’s Birthday and Jody and I were asked to make the birthday cake. Of course we couldn’t just wake a chocolate cake right from a box… no we decided (and may have been a bit coerced) into making a copy-cat version of The Cheesecake Factories red velvet cheesecake. The important thing to know is that neither Jody or I have ever made a cake from scratch, much less made a cheese cake! But I guess with some things you just need to dive in head first.

It may have taken us two days and a lot of patience but it turned out pretty good and we had fun doing it.

And as always there has to be a baby picture =) We dressed Baby Man in his “Nut’s about Grandma” onesie… or should I say Gangy.
